Healthcare
The healthcare industry supports hundreds of thousands of Maryland jobs and is one of the largest sectors that drives economic activity in Maryland.
While healthcare is a non-traditional setting for apprenticeship programs, many employers engage in the Apprenticeship Maryland Program (AMP), also known as youth apprenticeship, and Registered Apprenticeship (RA). There are several clinical and non-clinical occupations approved as registered apprenticeships in Maryland. These programs introduce a new generation to occupations in the healthcare industry and develop talent pipelines for critical roles. Healthcare employers investing in this system find reduced employee onboarding costs, improved workforce productivity, reduced rates of staff turnover, and increased innovation.
Maryland Leading the Charge
Nationally and in Maryland, apprenticeships in healthcare are on the rise. In 2021, there were over 13,000 registered apprentices in healthcare occupations such as Licensed Practical Nurse, Medical Assistant, and Medical Coding. This is a 250% increase in almost 10 years. Locally, we find healthcare employers apprenticing for clinical and non-clinical roles as well. In Maryland, current registered occupations include Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, Patient Care Technician, Pharmacy Technician, Sterile Processing Technician, Stationary Engineer, and Surgical Technician.
Youth in Healthcare

Students enrolled in Academy of Health Professions, an MSDE CTE Program of Study, are prepared to begin youth apprenticeships as direct service providers or Certified Nurse Aides for a pathway in patient care or medical assisting. These students can continue in a registered apprenticeship upon graduation as a licensed practical nurse, sterile processing technician, or other clinical occupation approved by the Maryland Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship Training.
