What is an Apprenticeship Sponsor
An apprenticeship sponsor is an individual, association, committee, organization, or employer in whose name or title the apprenticeship program is or will be registered. They oversee training development and ensure apprentices receive effective, hands-on learning and technical instruction. Often, this is the employer, but some or all of these duties may be contracted to a third party categorized as either a Joint Sponsor or Group Non-Joint Sponsor.
Group Non-Joint Sponsor vs Joint Sponsor
The principal differences between group non-joint sponsors and joint sponsors lies in their organizational structure and scope of involvement. Group non-joint sponsors coordinate apprenticeship programs across multiple employers, while joint sponsors manage a program exclusively for their workforce. Both types of sponsors play critical roles in supporting apprenticeship programs and advancing workforce development initiatives.
What Is an Intermediary?
While not a requirement, intermediaries play a critical part in supporting the development, implementation, and success of apprenticeship programs by:
facilitating partnerships

- Navigating regulatory requirements
- Supporting program development
- Recruiting and matching apprentices
- Coordinating related instruction
- Offering support services
- Monitoring and evaluating programs
- Promoting apprenticeship awareness
Intermediary efforts contribute to expanding access to high-quality apprenticeship opportunities and building a skilled and competitive workforce. Without an intermediary, the educator, employer, or sponsor may execute this role instead.
